A valve lifter's primary purpose is fairly straightforward, to open the engine valve. It is mounted on the camshaft and transmits the cam lobe's movements to the valves through the pushrods and rockers. Valve lift and duration are determined by the size and form of the cam lobe under the lifter (multiplied by the rocker arm ratio).
