How To: Choose the Correct Pod Filter / Velocity Stack

Black Pod Filter

The air we breathe provides a vital fuel to keep our systems running.

Your motorcycle is no different.

With the proper flow of air, the fuel/air mixture will be off, and things can go from rough to non-running rather quickly.

Pod filters and velocity stacks greatly increase the airflow on any motorcycle, and they happen to look awesome on these vintage bikes!

If you’re chasing gains, take a second to review these tips and tricks to help choose the correct ones for your vintage speed machine!

Measuring Your Carburetors

Most of our pod filter and velocity stack options are listed for specific motorcycles, but they do have the ability to fit additional makes and models.

Simply find the OD (outside diameter) of the air intake side of your carbs (pictured below).

Once you have gathered that easy measurement, you can compare it to the options we have available on the website. All of the pod filters and velocity stacks have those measurements provided on their respective product pages to help you determine if they will be a match or not.

And, if you are uncertain for any reason, don’t hesitate to contact customer service via email and we will be glad to answer any and all questions.

Jetting

Change the airbox out and replace with individual pod filters: time to rejet.

Increase the size of the engine, change cams, and more: time to rejet.

If you change exhaust systems or remove baffles, guess what: time to rejet.

You’re probably getting the picture now. When you change ANYTHING related to airflow through the engine, you typically must consider corresponding changes to the carbs.

One of the first steps we suggest when you start to work on your carbs is to take an inventory of the internals. The main and pilot jets, the needle clip setting, etc. Check against the shop manual or online fiche to see if they are stock or have been swapped out by the previous owner.

Every bike is different, but the rule of thumb when converting to pod filters / velocity stacks is as follows:

+3 sizes on the main jet

+2 sizes on the pilot jet

a mid-range clip position on the slide needle

Several test rides and spark plug checks will help you dial it in from there, either enriching or leaning out the fuel/air mixture.

It’s simple math: more air = more power!
