Steve emailed us a few pictures of his 1974 Yamaha TX650A that he just finished rebuilding.
Steve’s story: Used a lot of Mike’sXS bits in the process, engine, stainless spokes, brake bits, electrical bits, suspension, and a lot of the small rubber bits you carry. Taper rollers in the neck & bronze swingarm bushings also.
The frame was stripped and powder coated black. The motor was completely disassembled & vapor blasted clean. Had to replace one cylinder liner, then rebore using 2nd OS pistons/rings. Used your valves, cam chain, & gasket set, as well as the e-start and clutch bearing upgrades. Replaced the fork springs and shocks with your progressive units. Added the external oil filter kit as well.
The wheels, hubs, & brake plate were vapor blasted, then powder coated flat clear. There was too much corrosion on the engine side covers for polishing to eliminate, so I did them the same way. I like the look.
The bike was almost complete when I got it, but it had been left outside neglected for quite some time. Looks were deceiving. Got the side covers from eBay as the originals were missing. The tank and side covers have not been repainted, only polished up well. Still looks pretty good, and now goes good. Exhaust is original, but cleaned up pretty well. I did not want to obsess over paint & chrome.
Overall look I wanted was a respectable looking stocker that goes down the road well.
